Tips for Combating Winter Dryness
Winter dryness – two of my least favorite words. Your heater is on, the moisture level is down, and your lips and hands are indefinitely chapped for yet another season. One of the most important things to know about moisture loss and dehydration in the skin is perfectly demonstrated by looking at a raisin. It was once a plump, wrinkle-free, juicy grape, but without water it’s shriveled, dry and wrinkled. No one wants to be a raisin.
It is also important to know that our skin can be both water dry and oil dry. Lipids, our natural oils, are so important in preventing lack of moisture in our skin. They work as a protective layer that holds in our hydration, preventing transepidermal water loss.
So now that you know what happens, how can you prevent it?

- My first tip would certainly be to make sure that you are using a SkinMedica moisturizer for your face, but sometimes even the best moisturizer needs a boost. Try adding SkinMedica’s Hydrating Complex prior to your moisturizer. Hydrating Complex draws 1000 times its weight in water, transforming your skin from a raisin to a grape.
- Remember to exfoliate. No moisture can actually penetrate through layers of dead dry skin, and even our lips need a gentle exfoliation. A Clarisonic brush and warm water is perfect for your sensitive dry lips. Make sure to apply a moisture-rich product like Nutritic Lip immediately following.
- Eat healthy fats. Make sure that your diet is rich with almonds, avocados, salmon and olive oil, just to name a few.
- Avoid overly hot baths and showers, and make sure to put your body and face lotion on right after bathing. Try to wear gloves when doing dishes or cleaning.
- Drink your water and fill your humidifier. Keeping yourself internally hydrated is a benefit to your body in so many ways, especially your skin. Putting moisture in the air helps your skin and even makes your house feel warmer.
