This is a very simple in-office procedure. The only preparation suggested is a discontinuation of NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, naproxen sodium, etc.) and blood thinners 1 week prior to your insertion. If this is not possible, please discuss with your provider.
Pellets can be inserted in only a few minutes and the insertion is virtually painless. During the in-office visit, patients are brought into the exam room and the insertion site is numbed. The most common site of insertion is the upper buttocks. A small incision is then made for the pellet to be inserted. Once the pellet is inserted, the insertion site is covered with a small bandage.
After pellet insertion, it's best to eliminate lower body exercise. This doesn't include walking, but extraneous exercise is not recommended. Swimming, hot tubs and bath tubs are to be avoided (this doesn't include showers). After removal of the bandage – in 3 days for women and 7 days for men – normal activities may resume. Within 7-10 days after your pellet insertion, Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) begins to work and you can go back to your active lifestyle.
Each patient's symptoms are unique and each patient's path to optimization is unique. Most patients report some symptom resolution in as little as two to four weeks, but full optimization may take up to 6 months. Your journey will be specialized to fit your specific needs. Your body didn't take just a few weeks to get out of balance, so expect it to take time for your body to adjust to your new optimized hormone levels.
Pellets last between 3 and 6 months depending on gender, weight, absorption rate, and the amount of deficiency at the time of administration. Most women require 4 pellet insertions a year and most men require 2.
Since the pellets are bioidentical and contain nothing other than the hormones your body naturally produces, the pellets will be completely dissolved and absorbed, leaving nothing behind.
Pellets allow for a consistent dosing throughout the day. Other forms of administration can create a rollercoaster effect for the user as they do not release consistent amounts all day.
Also, bioidentical hormones work better with the natural chemistry of the body because they most closely replicate the molecular structure of the hormones that occur naturally in the body.
